~ ERIC EATS HIS WHEATGERM ~
Mouth/Bottles/Percussion Music by Ralph Rosen
Lyrics & All Other Music by Grayson Hugh

He comes down from the blue blur of hills
from walking twenty miles
he got a bungalow on Barham Boulevard
and he hardy ever smiles

Well, he walked all day to chase his blues away
on that dry and dusty trail
some times he wondered why he wound up here
in this strange cool rock star tale

He rose early without a word
put on his ancient overalls
and he squinted to the daylight
from his linoleum tiled kitchen walls

Eric eats his wheatgerm
Eric eats his wheatgerm
he don’t wait for when it’s his turn
Eric eats his wheatgerm

Sometimes he stayed up real late
watchin’ old movies on the tv
he’d get ideas for symphonies
and record ‘em til half past three
I’d see him in the hall sometimes
or in the basement laundry room
when I asked him about where he’s from
his eyes woke up and bloomed

He told me of his high school days
in the East Ohio hills
he talked like he was singin’ a song
it made me get the chills
I could see the teenage Eric
before the years redrew his face
when he was young and in the picture
still lookin’ for his place

And how’d he ever wind up here
in this pen for folks like me,
musicians, writers and tv actors
all migrating across the whole country?
Eric’s got a story
more interesting than me
and the chapters of his life
are like some epic odyssey

Eric eats his wheatgerm
Eric eats his wheatgerm
he don’t wait for when it’s his turn
Eric eats his wheatgerm

Eric eats his wheatgerm
Eric eats his wheatgerm
he don't care if daylight burns
Eric eats his wheatgerm

We all got the same old story
just different in the details
we start, stop and begin again.
Call me Odysseus - I’ll call you Ishmael.
